Quilling

Recently I have found new love for quilling. I used to do some crafts as a child that used quilling techniques but I did not know the formal work. When I started quilling formally, I cut strips of paper sheets and rolled them into shape by hand. The paper was not right, colors were not synchronized and widths of strips for shapes were not same. I was not happy with my work at all. Few weeks later I found about the quilling tools available in store. The craft stores have beautiful colored strips for paper quilling.

I got 2 sets of colors, once with bluish shades and another with earthen colors. And I decided to get some quilling tools too. (I was looking for jobs that time, thanks to hubby for buying me the quilling stuff, he also got me other tools, will talk about them in another post).SMXL

I made lot of cards.

1. Flower card

The colors I used here are very lively, also I love the texture of the paper I used for background (off-white). I have layered 3 papers; black base, then pink rectangle and topmost is off-white textured rectangle. This gave extra stiffness to the card.

2. Duck card

I chose blue and purple ducks with purple base and the of-white rectangle for foreground.

3. General Design

This card has lot of layering. I don’s use strips, I just arrange papers to form pattern. Cutting strips makes the card imbalanced and sticking small strips often messes up glue application on the card.

There is lot of quilling DIY online. But quilling is time consuming. Each shape takes a bit and then combining takes more time. Small cards are easy to do but the frame I made took 1 week. For someone, who is impatient like me that is like eternity and I was at home those days, so all day work for a week.

But I am very happy with the frame I made. I got the frame from Hobby Lobby at a discounted price (50% off). They have weekly deals, you can download their app for deals and coupons. The background of the frame is card-stock of different patterns. I have combined different card stocks for borders etc. I have experimented with most of the quilling shapes and patterns. I also used some stones for the flower centers.

We can make lot of jewelry from quilling, I would like to try that sometime. But the disadvantage is it is made of paper and can get damaged if it gets in contact with water. Hence I am not so keen on trying that.

I would like to make more quilling cards, peacock is on my to-do-list next.

Please do leave your feedback for my work.
